Creating a valid Sudoku is easy. Creating one that is unique, logically solvable and honestly graded is the hard part.
The Sudoku Way uses a bespoke puzzle engine that does more than generate boards. Every puzzle is constructed, checked for a single solution, solved using human-style logic and certified against the techniques required by its difficulty before you ever see it.
Play freely at any difficulty from the beginning, or set out on a fixed 53-station journey from First Dan to Tenth Dan — using mouse, keyboard, handwriting or controls designed around a gamepad from the start.

A GENERATOR THAT UNDERSTANDS SUDOKU
The Sudoku Way does not simply create a completed grid, remove some numbers and call the result a puzzle.
Every board must pass three separate checks:
- ONE UNIQUE SOLUTION — Clues are removed one at a time while the engine continually verifies that exactly one solution remains.
- A COMPLETE HUMAN-LOGIC SOLVE — A second solver must complete the entire puzzle using recognisable Sudoku deductions. It cannot guess, place speculative numbers or backtrack through possible solutions.
- CERTIFIED DIFFICULTY — The puzzle must contain the exact clue count for its selected difficulty and its logical solve path must match the techniques that define that level.
If a board fails any one of those checks, it is rejected and another is constructed.
There is no stored puzzle library and no finite pack waiting to repeat itself. Every board is freshly generated — but fresh never means random, untested or vaguely graded.
Every puzzle has one solution. Every puzzle has a logical route. Every difficulty means something specific.
FOUR DIFFICULTIES DEFINED BY ACTUAL LOGIC
Difficulty is not decided simply by counting how many numbers have been removed. Each level has an exact number of starting clues and a defined logical standard. The engine solves and analyses the finished puzzle before approving its difficulty.
- NOVICE — 50 GIVENS — Solved through direct single-cell deductions.
- ADEPT — 40 GIVENS — Requires longer sequences of naked singles and hidden singles.
- MASTER — 30 GIVENS — Introduces locked-candidate reasoning alongside single-based deductions.
- SAGE — 25 GIVENS — Requires advanced eliminations involving pairs and triples, with occasional X-Wing puzzles.
A board is not labelled Master merely because it has fewer clues than an Adept board. It must demonstrate the logical characteristics of Master difficulty when the solver analyses it.
Likewise, a Novice puzzle cannot unexpectedly demand an advanced technique. If the solve path does not fit the promised level, the puzzle does not reach the player.
THE LUCK COUNTER — CORRECT IS NOT ALWAYS DEDUCED
The same logical engine continues analysing the board while you play. This means The Sudoku Way can distinguish between a number you genuinely proved and a number that happened to be correct.
- MISSTEP — The placed number is incorrect.
- CLEAN MOVE — The number is correct and can currently be proven from the state of the board.
- LUCK — The number is correct, but the available logic did not yet prove that it belonged there.
Luck does not add a time penalty and never affects XP, rank or leaderboard position. It is not there to punish experimentation. It is there to show you how you solved the puzzle.
A zero-Luck finish means every number was earned through deduction. Once you begin watching the counter, reaching the right solution is no longer the entire challenge.
Correct does not always mean deduced.
CONTROLLER-FIRST — NOT CONTROLLER-ADDED-LATER
The Sudoku Way was designed around controller play from the beginning.
Hold a face button, point the stick towards a number on the radial wheel and release to place it. Hold a bumper to switch from individual-cell movement to whole 3×3-box movement, allowing you to cross the grid in only a few inputs.
The aim is to make controller entry feel as immediate as pressing a number key, so choosing a gamepad does not become a handicap when chasing your best times.
- CONTROLLER — Radial number entry, pencil marks, erasing and rapid 3×3-box navigation.
- KEYBOARD — Number-row or numpad entry, with arrow-key or WASD navigation.
- MOUSE — Direct cell selection and an on-screen number pad.
- HANDWRITING — Draw digits directly into the grid.
Switch between input methods at any time. Every method uses the same puzzles, clock and scoring rules.
THE WAY — 53 STATIONS, TEN DAN RANKS
The Way is a complete Sudoku career inspired by the fifty-three stations of the historic Tōkaidō road.
Each journey contains:</p>
- 15 Novice puzzles
- 14 Adept puzzles
- 13 Master puzzles
- 11 Sage puzzles
That is one continuous road of 53 puzzles and 2,318 empty cells.
The complete road is generated from a seed when your journey begins and then remains fixed. Leave at station twelve and return days later: the same puzzle, the same progress and the same remaining road will still be waiting.
Complete station 53 to earn your next Dan rank. Your first completed road awards First Dan, with each new journey carrying you onwards until you reach Tenth Dan.
Every promotion begins a new road under a fresh seed, permanently increases the XP earned from future puzzles and unlocks another board style.

Your active solving time is tracked across all fifty-three stations. Every incorrect placement adds fifteen seconds to your final result.
RANKED TIME = ACTIVE PLAY TIME + 15 SECONDS PER MISSTEP
That is the complete formula. Luck, XP, Dan rank and unlocks do not affect your score, and every input method follows the same rules.
Finish the road and your total time is submitted to the global Steam leaderboard. Only your fastest completed journey matters, giving every new Dan road a clear goal: solve more cleanly, make fewer missteps and finish faster.
The leaderboard measures how you solved — not what you unlocked.
FREE PLAY — EVERY DIFFICULTY AVAILABLE FROM THE START
Not every session needs to be part of a fifty-three-puzzle career run.
Free Play lets you generate a fresh board at any difficulty whenever you choose. Novice, Adept, Master and Sage are all available immediately, with nothing held behind progression.
Every Free Play puzzle receives the same uniqueness checks, complete no-guess solve, exact clue count and technique-based difficulty certification as a puzzle from The Way.
Free Play puzzles still award XP, update your records and contribute towards achievements.
Leave during a puzzle and the game saves it exactly as it stands, including entered numbers, pencil marks, missteps and elapsed time. Return whenever you are ready and continue from the same position.
FINISH THE GRID. REVEAL THE PAINTING.
Every background becomes part of the solve. Complete a 3×3 box and another section of the scene is revealed. Complete all nine boxes to uncover the full painting, with the final box triggering its ending animation.
The game includes 43 Japanese scenes ranging from quiet landscapes and travelling pilgrims to folklore and mythology inspired by:</p>

Some scenes are traditional static paintings. Others contain living elements, atmospheric movement and animated conclusions.
Nine scenes are available from the beginning. The remaining backgrounds are earned through play, levels and achievements, while new board styles are awarded through Dan progression.
Mix any unlocked scene with any unlocked board style to create your own playing environment.
WRITE THE DIGITS YOURSELF
Draw numbers directly into the grid using your mouse.
The handwriting system learns each digit separately. When you correct a result, the game stores another example of the number you intended, gradually adapting recognition to your own way of writing.
A dedicated calibration screen lets you write every digit, inspect what the game recognised, correct incorrectly detected numbers and provide more examples for the digits it still finds difficult.
Prefer another input method halfway through a puzzle? Switch immediately between handwriting, mouse, keyboard and controller without restarting the board.
PROGRESSION THAT STAYS WITH YOU
XP is earned in both The Way and Free Play. Your account-wide level unlocks additional backgrounds, every Dan awards a new board style, and achievements provide further in-game rewards.
Nothing disappears when a journey ends. Your level, Dan rank, board collection, scenes, achievements and records continue to grow across the entire game.
