Every battle survived is a season of a soldier's life. Recruits become regulars, regulars become scarred veterans, and veterans turn graybeard — slower, wiser, steadying the soldiers beside them. Retire them with honors and they leave an heirloom for the next generation of their lineage. Let them fall, and all that comes home is a memento.
